THURSDAY, January 9th, 2014

Today we had many great presentation & discussions through-out the day.  We heard from two great panel sessions: Tribal Sovereignty, Philanthropy +Creative Financing, and Climate Change in Indian County: Fusing Traditional Knowledge + Science. We had couple great key points:

We heard about funding for tribal food systems range from project grants awards to low-interest loans for larger initiatives. Leaders in philanthropy and creative financing discussed foundation support for Indian Country and new and emerging funding programs.

Many tribes are integrating climate change adaptation into their management plans.

How does the combination of science and traditional knowledge change how tribes manage traditional food systems?

Then we broke-out into smaller groups to discuss the tracks: Land-Based Treaty Rights, Tribal Sovereignty+ First Food, and Youth, Elders + Innovation. We heard summaries from the facilitators and hope to post the notes as soon as we get them typed out.

Thank you everyone for coming to the first Tribal Food Summit. It was beautiful to see the community get together to share what’s important. I hope this inspired you all to continue the great discussions and take them back home. Don’t forget to check back for pictures, notes, and materials.

WEDNESDAY, January 8th, 2014

We listened to a beautiful prayer and a great introduction to start of the Tribal Food Summit. Then we headed to the break-out rooms to attend a panel presentation of these topics:

 Land-Based Treaty Rights: The Tulalip Tribes assert their food-related treaty rights locally, through creative partnerships with agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, and by promoting national and international policies, to protect the rights of indigenous people. We learned about some of these creative negotiation tools that safeguard traditional foods.

 Tribal Sovereignty + First Foods: Tribal leaders and policy managers shared their work to protect tribal foods through innovative agreements and tribal governance from the Oregon coast and Olympic Peninsula to eastern Oregon.

Youth, Elders + Innovation: Youth and elders worked together to remember old food ways for future generations with new programs and tools like social media, gardening and cooking classes. Tribal elders and emerging leaders shared their insights on how to reinvent traditional food ways for tribes.

We also heard from Brett Ramey who shared and engaged the audience with an interactive session of Food, Medicine & Community.  We had two great HOW TO Workshops: How to Organize Food Projects, and Communicating Key Messages for Media. Tribal Food Summit Event

The Tribal Food Summit, to bring together Native local food gatherers, stewards, producers, manufacturers, and growers, will be held January 8-9, 2014, in Portland, Oregon. The educational Summit is dedicated to connecting emerging youth leaders with tribal Elders. Keynote speakers and panelists will discuss the history of Native foods, legal issues and solutions, and philanthropy in Indian Country including next steps towards realizing the Summit’s motto:
Protect. Respect. Restore.
